18 Best Tips for McMenamins Kennedy School
McMenamins Kennedy School is hands down one of the best McMenamins locations! This old converted school is nestled in Northeast...
McMenamins Edgefield is one of my favorite properties overall and has so much packed into the 74-acre property. Edgefield is the only McMenamins hotel with every single amenity offered! Here you will find a spa, a massive soaking pool, all the alcohol production you could want, and even two small golf courses. With all that it has to offer, McMenamins Edgefield lands in the top spot on my ultimate ranking of every McMenamins hotel!

Edgefield is located about 20 minutes outside of Portland in what I consider a Portland suburb, right near the Columbia River. Edgefield is a historic property with a really cool backstory. Be sure to do the walking tour when you visit so you can learn all about those who used to call it home. Edgefield is third on my list because of the amazing amenities, there is just so much to do, but be aware - it is a loud property!

So what can you find at Edgefield? The BEST soaking pool, it is huge and for spa and hotel guests only, Ruby's Spa, two small par 3 golf courses, a winery, a brewery, a distillery, fire pits, multiple stand alone bars, a move theater, a really nice restaurant (looking at you Black Rabbit), an outdoor concert venue, pubs, and a pool hall.

McMenamins Edgefield offers standard McMenamins hotel rooms, very few with private bathrooms, and hostel rooms (no minors allowed). Given that most have shared bathrooms, you should book well in advance if you want a room with a private bath. Also, be careful of concert weekends - the shows sell out fast and so do the rooms. The rooms do not have TV's or WiFi, but you shouldn't need either since there is so much to do at this property.

The one reason Edgefield almost lost it's top spot, the building is really loud! It is a beautiful historic building, but this means little insulation, loud doors, even louder floors, and echoing noise. While this makes this location really tough for me to sleep, the other factors outweigh this negative and it rightfully sits as my number 1 McMenamins hotel!

Here is a quick overview of all you can find at Edgefield:

There are so many things to do at Edgefield and with all of the activities, come a whole lot of insider secrets! Before you check out Edgefield, be sure to check out my 17 Best Tips for Staying at Edgefield!

McMenamins Passport Holders - Edgefield has ten (!) stamps! It is a great place to pick up your golf stamp if you don't want to splurge on a full round at Gearthart and is also a great location to snag your tour and tasting stamps.

If you plan to stay at a McMenamins hotel be sure to sign up for the McMenamins Frequent Guest Program! If you sign up and book your room through the online system, you get points for each stay. Once you hit 900 points you will see 900 point room rates and can redeem your points for discount and free rooms! Also known as a 50/50, a McMenamins blend is a mix of two McMenamins beers. More recently ciders have been introduced into the McMenamins blends and now there are so many great options!

McMenamins has 24 breweries across Oregon and Washington. McMenamins brews certain classic recipes - think Terminator Stout, Ruby, and Apple Cider- as well as limited edition and seasonal recipes. The seasonal brews and crafted ciders are some of my favorite, but since they only come around once in a while, you will definitely need to plan ahead to try them all.

I am not sure how the McMenamins blends started, but clearly by some genius who decided they couldn't pick just one. You can really mix any two McMenamins beers and/or ciders to make a 50/50 blend, but here are the ten BEST McMenamins blends!

You can always check out everything McMenamins has on tap here: McMenamins What's On Tap!

Heading to the McMenamins hotels and looking for a great beverage? Or maybe you want to try all the blends you can during your stay? Be sure to check out my Ultimate Ranking for Every McMenamins Hotel before you book!

A classic, and probably the most well known 50/50 blend, the Rubinator is 50% Ruby and 50% Terminator. The mix of a deep rich stout and the light, crispy, and fruit forward Ruby make the perfect balance. This was the first McMenamins blend I ever tried and it is still one of the best. I am not a stout drinker by any means, but once it is cut with the Ruby, it is light enough for me to enjoy.

McMenamins Ruby is brewed with raspberries and the Terminator is a true stout with coffee and chocolate flavors. I think a Rubinator tastes like a chocolate covered raspberry and I am all for it.

The Purpetrator is my preferred 50/50 beer blend because it mixes one of my favorite McMenamins seasonal beers - Purple Haze - with the Terminator Stout. I prefer Purple Haze over the Ruby so this is a clear winner for me. That said, Purple Haze is a more limited beer and it is not served all year or at all locations. If you find yourself at a location with Purple Haze, I highly recommend you give the Purpetrator a try.

Purple Haze is made with boysenberries and is a bit more fruity than the Ruby.

The Imperial Purpetrator is a 50/50 blend of Purple Haze and the Imperial Purple Haze and Terminator. Imperial Purple Haze is an even more limited beer and is a more tart and full bodied version of the Purple Haze. This McMenamins blend is a bit heavier than the Rubinator and Purpetrator, but still totally drinkable even if you aren't super into stouts.

With one of the best names, the Pill Hopper is a McMenamins 50/50 blend made with a McMenamins IPA and a McMenamins Pilsner. McMenamins brews more than one IPA and more than one Pilsner. You can find the Hop Bouquet IPA all year round and at almost all locations so this is an easy pick for this blend, but if you happen to see a limited or seasonal IPA on the menu - go for it! White Tiger IPA and Sunflower IPA are a great one for this blend.

For the Pilsner 50% you will need to look for a limited or seasonal brew since there is no Pilsner on the McMenamins classic (aka standard) brew list. It is also not one of the more common seasonal brews, like Purple Haze, so this is definitely one to try when you happen to see a Pilsner on the list!

Most people have heard of the Rubberhead, but the Cooperhead is another great McMenamins blend. I have seen this McMenamins blend with two different names - the Copperhead and the Moon Hammer - I tend to call it a Copperhead but to order you should be able to use either!

The Copperhead is made with the Copper Moon and Hammerhead. The Hammerhead is a classic McMenamins brew that you can find almost anywhere and is a Northwest Pale Ale (not an IPA). Copper Moon on the other hand is a very limited brew.

Copper Head is a summertime Pale Ale that is pretty hop forward. Based on the season for Copper Moon it makes sense that this one is a really light and drinkable pale ale blend. Be sure to add this on your list for summer McMenamins stops!

The Rubberhead is one of the most well known McMenamins blends, but not quite as famous as the Rubinator. Rubberhead is a blend of Hammerhead and Ruby - two classics. Since this McMenamins 50/50 blend mixes two classic McMenamins beers you can score this one all year round and at almost all locations. This is a really refreshing one and I highly recommend this as one of your soaking pool beverages (Oregon locations only)!

Rippa, as in Kelly, is a McMenamins blend for IPA fans who also like a touch of sweet. This McMenamins blend is a mix of Ruby and a McMenamins IPA. You can take your pick of IPA's based on the menu, but since the Hop Bouquet is an all year round option, that is an easy pick.

If you want to try something different, you can make you Rippa with a Ruby and one of the following:

So I promised cider and I will deliver. I am not aware of any fun names for these two cider McMenamins blends yet, but I am sure they are coming.

This is my absolute favorite McMenamins blend - a 50/50 blend of Blackberry Cider and Terminator! I will call this Berrynator, because I can. I love cider and sweet so the McMenamins Blackberry Cider, which just got promoted to a year round classic, is delicious to me. But it can be really sweet! This means that the Terminator is the perfect way to cut the sweet.

Tasting like a chocolate blackberry, with a much more fruit forward and tart taste, this McMenamins blend takes my personal top spot. You can drink it in the summer, because blackberry, but also in the dead of winter, because Terminator!

Although I learned about this scrumptious McMenamins Blend from a bartender at Ahles Point Cabin at Kalama Harbor Lodge, it does not have a formal name as far as I know. Thankfully, my friend Alexis, a two time Cosmic Tripster, helped me out and we have named it - Meet the Berrynator!

One more delicious beer and cider 50/50 McMenamins blends is the Kolsh and the McMenamins Apple Cider. While you can find the McMenamins Apple Cider year around and at most locations, the Kolsh is a seasonal so this has a limited time window. The Hawthorne Kolsh is brewed at the Edgefield Brewery, which happens to be where the McMenamins Apple Cider is made too - it was destiny!

This is another great mix of sweet with a touch of hoppy. I tried this one on a whim when the smaller McMenamins bar did not have any of my usuals and I was pleasantly surprised. This is a great pick for a hot day or just when you want a cider but do not want it too sweet.

McMenamins Elks Temple is the newest McMenamins hotel and is full of so many great drink stops! Elks Temple is located in downtown Tacoma in a beautifully restored seven story historical building. It sits right next to the Spanish Steps, which were modeled after the Spanish Steps in Rome. This McMenamins hotel has so many drink spots and a music venue, but not too many other amenities. It does have a secret room and a secret bar! Secret bars are probably one of the coolest McMenamins stops so that definitely gets bonus points.

Elks Temple is the perfect place to stay if you just want to drink your way "around the world" without ever going outside. Some rooms have views of the Puget Sound and all of the rooms, which have king size beds, have private bathrooms, WiFi, and TV. Elks Temple is home to the Spanish Ballroom - a live music venue.

A perfect McMenamins weekend would be spending your day wandering around the bars, check out a live show in the Spanish Ballroom, and sleep it off at Elks Temple. Plan for parking to be a bit tough and given the limited amenities, have some day plans in and around Tacoma. Visiting the Spanish Steps is a great start!

What makes McMenamins Elks Temple rank so high on my list is not only the endless world of bars, but the detail! McMenamins Elks Temple was a long project, taking around a decade from purchase to open, and that time allowed McMenamins to make every single tiny detail just beautiful. The art is next level and every inch of this property is unique and stunning. This is really McMenamins crown jewel when it comes to property revitalization and beauty. Don't forget to look at every pipe, ceiling, corner, and doorframe - you will not be disappointed.

Here is a quick list of what you will find throughout the seven story Elks Temple:

McMenamins Passport Holders - Elks Temple has six stamps! This is also a great spot to get your taste a flight (beer, wine, or cider) stamp.

McMenamins Grand Lodge, located in Forest Grove, Oregon, is another historic property with a lot to offer! While this McMenamins hotel has fewer amenities than Edgefield, it is much quieter/easier for sleep, has more rooms with private bathrooms, and is located right on the edge of the Willamette Valley.

Grand Lodge is a great staycation spot and the historic property is full of history, amenities, and upgraded rooms! McMenamins Grand Lodge offers king, double, queen, full, and bunk bed rooms and the main floor rooms just got a massive upgrade which resulted in new attached bathrooms for every room. My personal favorite is the new(ish) top floor which is full of fun rooms with attached bathrooms and super comfy beds. It is also quite enough that I can actually sleep!

McMenamins Grand Lodge has a lot to offer as it is one of the few properties with a soaking pool, movie theater, and full service spa. Since this location is a bit smaller than Edgefield, it makes a great place to stay if you want to start your day in the Willamette Valley for some wine tasting and stay outside of the Portland. You can always find a fire pit spot, live music, and in the summer months, outdoor movies at this location!

Here is the quick rundown of all you will find at McMenamins Grand Lodge:

Although much smaller than the Edgefield soaking pool, Grand Lodge has a great outdoor soaking pool. One of the coolest features of this property...it's haunted! For me, this is a huge perk! I have not yet seen a ghost, but I will continue to stay on the top floor and wait for this free McMenamins experience. Don't miss out on the secret rooms and secret passages at Grand Lodge either! No spoilers in this post, but trust me - they are worth the hunt!

McMenamins Passport Holders - Grand Lodge has seven (7) stamps. Unlike Edgefield, non-hotel guests and non-spa guests can pick up a pass to the soaking pool so this is a great spot to get your soak stamp!

McMenamins Old St. Francis School (yup, another school!) is my top ranked McMenamins school turned hotel! Old St. Francis School is located in Bend, Oregon, just steps from downtown and a quick drive from all of the outdoor beauty Bend has to offer. Old St. Francis School is not only my favorite school turned hotel, but it is also one of the top two McMenamins hotel!

Although located right in Bend, Old St. Francis School has a lot of property and multiple buildings. The most amazing "indoor" but really not indoor soaking pool can be found at this McMenamins hotel along with a movie theater, brewery, and a secret bar!

McMenamins Old St. Francis School is in fact an old school, making this historic property really fun to stay in. I would recommend booking early as in my experience, just like most of Bend, this McMenamins hotel can fill up quickly. All rooms Old St. Francis School have private bathrooms and TV's. Since there are multiple buildings at this property, many of which contain hotel rooms, your room might vary depending on what building you are in.

Here is the quick list of all you can find at Old St. Francis School:

The Broom Close is is a secret bar so I won't tell you where to find it in this post! This is my absolute favorite McMenamins secret room and such a fun McMenamins twist on a speak easy!

McMenamins Passport Holders - Old St. Francis School has five (5) stamps!

This means that the Terminator is the perfect way to cut the sweet.

Tasting like a chocolate blackberry, with a much more fruit forward and tart taste, this McMenamins blend takes my personal top spot.

This might seem obvious, but it wasn't to me. You can mix any two McMenamins ciders for a delicious 50/50 blend! To order this I just ask for a 50/50 blend of...and name the two ciders I want. Be careful mixing two sweet ciders, it can be really sweet. One of my favorite ciders to mix in a McMenamins blend is the TriPPPy Cider, which is seasonal and made with peach and pineapple, and the Pear, which is also seasonal.

This is a great gluten free option and I promise cider fans will not be disappointed. The two McMenamins ciders you can get all year round are Apple and Blackberry - so these are great for the first 50%. When it comes to the other, be creative! I have yet to have a McMenamins 50/50 cider blend I didn't enjoy.

Thirsty yet? Did you learn any new McMenamins blends from my list? What McMenamins blends did I miss that are a MUST try?

Just be sure you book your room through the Frequent Guest portal.

I hope you enjoyed my ultimate ranking of every McMenamins hotel and you are ready go to explore!
